-- Unfortunately since the time of this post City Moto has had to close its doors --
During a personal trip to Indianapolis, IN I thought that I might as well visit some of the local motorcycle hotspots in hopes to further my quest for two wheeled knowledge. Despite unseasonably warm weather, overcast was still hanging over the city skyline and I needed to find a fix for my cloudy sky woes.
Hungry and tired from the night before, my partner and I grabbed some brunch and found ourselves in the SoBro district. Fortunately for me, South Broad Ripple was not only a destination for trendy eateries and coffeehouses, but was also home to City Moto. One map search and Spanish latte later, I was crossing the threshold of City Moto.
Serving as a retail oasis for quality motorcycle riding and lifestyle goods, City Moto has been in business for roughly three and a half years, and is a definite place to visit for anyone who even remotely enjoys motorcycles.
At the helm of City Moto are business partners Kurt Schmielau and Joe Otter. They saw a need for a common place where riders can actually try on quality gear as opposed to playing the guesswork game when ordering online.
“A lot of the stuff is European size. It’s really hard to buy on the internet because everything fits so differently,” said Schmielau. “We were frustrated that you couldn’t try a lot of the stuff on. We were both looking for other stuff that you couldn’t just normally buy down the street,” he continued.
City-Moto has also helped cultivate a deeper sense of community between motorcycle riders in the area, acting as a meeting ground for like minded individuals.
“There’s this whole community that’s kind of come together and a bunch of good friends have come out of it so that has been the big plus,” explained Schmielau.
City-Moto also hosts art shows that feature work from riders as well as charity auctions. Be on the lookout for their annual helmet auction, which is in conjunction with local animal clinic, FACE.
“We try and support a lot of local events and rides, so I like to think that we have helped kind of bring that community together a little bit more,” said Otter.
City-Moto is a great place to stop and soak up some motorcycle culture, and also support a local business. In the short time that I was there, multiple riders showed up only to walk in with a smile on their face and a sense familiarity in their voices. By experiencing these interactions first hand, I can attest to the fact that City-Moto provides not only goods, but a service to the community.
